Tag: 7 things I’ve learned from Beauty Blogging

I didn’t get this one, I just decided to do it since I wanted to share a couple of things I’ve learned so far.  Why seven?  No idea, probably because it’s my favorite number.

  1. If you’re not doing it for fun, just quit.  I keep this blog because I love makeup and I love experimenting with it, and though it could be fun sharing my results.
  2. Blogs full of PR texts are boring.  If I enjoyed PR texts telling me the alleged wonders of every product, I would just read magazines instead.  Blogs with an opinion based on experience with the product are more enjoyable to read.
  3. In order to give a proper opinion on a product, you need to try it at least a couple of days, under different conditions –this does not apply for skincare, for that you need at least a month.  If some tries something for a couple of hours and then raves about it, I personally don’t find it trusty.  I prefer to try stuff many days under the worst conditions ever (the high pretty polluted A/C at my job) and then I can tell if it’s good or not.
  4. Having said that, I tend to trust more blogs that are not all about reviews but have a mix of reviews, with ideas on how to wear products and random stuff.  At least I can believe they did try the product before writing about it.  I still can check review only blogs, but mostly for pictures and swatches.
  5. Swatches are always fun to see and help you to see opacity, texture, if it evenly applies, etc.  Yet, unless you find a perfect skin twin it may not be that helpful to find out how it will look on you.  For that reason, I classify blog links according to skintone.
  6. Makeup blogs aren’t the best source for skincare advice.  I’ve read tons of reviews saying “it feels luxurious on the skin” and unfortunately, I think it’s more important that a skincare product is effective than the feeling.  I’ve also read horrendous advices like “just use a pea size of sunscreen so you don’t feel it greasy” –I almost fainted, wearing a pea size of sunscreen is like wearing no sunscreen at all.  There are many good skincare blogs to check out, I even have a list on the left column of this post.
  7. Pictures with a white background are always the best.  I’ve experimented with different cameras (from iphone to reflex) and backgrounds… A good camera helps, but a nice white background with good lighting have proved to work the best.

... About the blogger

I’ve been a beauty junkie before beauty blogs became that popular. I’ve always loved HE makeup, since my mom gave me as a gift my first dior quint and gloss. Many friends and acquaintances asked me for makeup recommendations and sometimes even to do their makeup. So just one day, I decided to share my thoughts and experience by writing a blog.
